If I remember correctly, President Obama won the Democratic nomination based on the promise to end the war in Iraq. But, between Iraq and Afghanistan, at the end of this year we will actually have more troops in harm’s way then we did at the height of the ‘surge.’ That’s just as bad as we had it under President Bush. These wars now belong to President Obama. The blood is on his hands.” Henthorn is a member of Gold Star Families Speak Out, a national chapter of Military Families Speak Out whose members’ loved ones died a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our Troops and Iraqis Are Still Dying: An Open Letter to the Peace/Anti-War Movement from IVAW, MFSO, and VFP
After six years of war and the historic election of a new President, we as veterans, military and Gold Star families felt an urgent need to reach out to the larger peace/anti-war movements to make our position on Iraq clear during this time of political and economic uncertainty. Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out and Veterans For Peace continue to stand together in our demand to Bring the Troops Home Now! We ask all those who have stood with us in the past to stay faithful to the cause.
Six Years Too Long!
As military and Gold Star families, we are dedicated to doing everything in our power to bring this misbegotten war to an end – now. We know that many in America are struggling with the impacts of a failing economy. But we want to remind the people of this country that military families and our loved ones are also struggling daily with the impacts of this on-going war that is being conducted in all of our names, with monies borrowed from all of our grandchildren. Military Families Speak Out asks the American people: “Will you join us now, on the eve of the seventh year of a war based on lies, in calling for an immediate end to the U.S. military occupation of Iraq, for all of our troops to be brought home now, and for them to receive the care they need when they return?”

April Medlin, a Military Families Speak Out chapter leader from Las Vegas, NV said: "My brother began his 3rd deployment to Iraq in Dec. 2008. He is a U.S. Army Tank Commander. While it is encouraging to hear that some of the troops will be returning home, I can't help but feel concern for the soldiers, and for the families of those who won't be returning. It is an outrage for even one service member to remain! True change only occurs when it happens to all of us. . True change only happens when a war that should never have happened is ended. People have got to stop dying in Iraq, before I will feel like 'Change' has come."
MILITARY FAMILIES COME TO WASHINGTON TO PUSH FOR END TO IRAQ WAR

Military Families Express Concern About Gates' Continued Tenure At Pentagon
said: "As the father of three active duty sons, who between them, have had five tours in , I was guardedly optimistic with the election of Barack Obama. I hoped a change in the administration would bring a change in the policy and keep my oldest son from being deployed next spring. That optimism diminished with the announcement that Robert Gates would continue to be the Secretary of Defense. "
Military Families to VA: Stop Denying That Military Suicides Are Casualties of War
Members of Military Families Speak Out are condemning comments by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs suggesting that the dramatic increase in the suicide rate among young veterans is not connected to the war in Iraq. President-Elect Obama, Honor Veterans By Ending the Iraq War
The war in Iraq was wrong from the beginning and it is wrong today. Vow that war will only be used as a solution of last resort. I urge you both, as military parents, during this Vice-Presidential debate, to commit to ending the war in , bring the troops home and take care of them when they get here."
Military Families Speak Out: Iraq Troop Withdrawals Too Little, Too Late
Pat Alviso, a Military Families Speak Out chapter leader from Long Beach, CA added "This is obviously an election year ploy -- committing to troop reductions that would be completed under the next President's watch. We don't just need adjustments in troop levels, we need an end to the military occupation of Iraq. It is the presence of combat troops that is causing the violence toward our troops. There is no reason for any of them to stay in Iraq another day." Alviso's son has completed two tours of duty with the Marines in Iraq and is preparing for another deployment.

MILITARY FAMILIES SAY: STOP PLAYING POLITICAL GAMES WITH OUR TROOPS' PAYCHECKS!
Lisa Leitz, a member of Military Families Speak Out from Buellton, CA, said: "Secretary Gates is engaging in a scare tactic where once again our troops are used as pawns in a political game. The Pentagon has a $481.4 billion budget from which it could pay the troops and fund their benefits. The supplemental appropriations bill now before Congress specifically funds the continuation of an illegal and immoral war that has already killed and physically and psychologically injured too many of our loved ones. As the spouse of Navy pilot on his second deployment, I was thrilled to see the House do the right thing and cut the funding for this war, and I hope the Senate will do the same."
GOLD STAR FAMILIES TO PRESIDENT BUSH: HOW DARE YOU COMPARE OUR SACRIFICE TO GIVING UP GOLF?
President Bush, showed an appalling lack of respect, understanding, and common decency when he told a reporter this week that he you no longer plays golf because “I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.” How dare he equate his decision to give up playing golf with the sacrifice he has demanded from our families and from the 4,077 U.S. troops killed in combat and the many thousands more who have taken their own lives or died because of drugs and alcohol as a result of the horrors they witnessed in Iraq?

MILITARY FAMILIES CALL ON CONGRESS TO REJECT SPEAKER PELOSI'S BETRAYAL OF OUR TROOPS
As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi prepares to implement a strategy that will fund the Iraq war through 2008 and into the first term of the next president, Military Families Speak Out members across the country and on military bases around the world are outraged at this massive betrayal of our loved ones, all of our troops, our families, this nation and the people of Iraq. This strategy is designed to allow Congress to avoid a potentially embarrassing vote in the weeks and months leading up to the election in November, and to prevent a new president from having to ask for war funding in his/her first months in office. It is a cruel maneuver being done on the backs, bodies, and spirits of our troops.

In November, 2006, the American people elected a Congress that they believed would end the war in Iraq.A year and half later, this mission remains unaccomplished. Taking three months off standard deployments is cold comfort to military families as we witness dramatically rising suicide rate among our troops, the epidemic of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the destruction of body, spirit and family from deployments to a war that should never have started. EMPTY CHAIRS AT THE HOLIDAY TABLES OF MILITARY FAMILIES
Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), a national organization of over 3,100 families opposed to the war in Iraq who have relatives or loved ones in the military, has members across the country who are suffering this holiday season with pain, tears and fear rather than holiday cheer. As the Bush administration and Congress engage in a seemingly endless debate about how to make the war in Iraq “go better”, the number of U.S. troop deaths is approaching the next horrific milestone of 3,000.
GOLD STAR FAMILIES RESPOND TO PRESIDENT BUSH: NO HONOR COMES TO OUR FALLEN LOVED ONES FROM MORE DEATHS IN IRAQ
“The only thing worse than having so many die in a war that should never have happened is to have this war claim even more lives. Those who have already died will best be honored by a nation and a Congress with the courage to stop the carnage and end the war,” said Nancy Lessin, co-founder of Military Families Speak Out.

MILITARY FAMILIES CHALLENGE IRAQ STUDY GROUP REPORT AS “THE WAY SIDEWAYS,”
PAVING THE WAY FOR LONG-TERM U.S. MILITARY PRESENCE IN IRAQ

December 6th, 2006
Washington D.C., December 6, 2006 – Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), a nonpartisan organization of over 3,100 military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, faults the Iraq Study Group report released today as being about "The Way Sideways," rather than "The Way Forward." The three basic recommendations of the report - step up diplomatic efforts with other nations in the region, talk tough to the Iraq government to get them to 'step up to the plate', and withdraw some U.S. combat troops but leave a significant number of troops in Iraq to provide training, logistical and rapid response capabilities - will not end the war in Iraq. Alaska Military Families Respond to Senator Murkowski’s Press Release Expressing Gratitude to Secretary Rumsfeld
Families tell Murkowski: “No Gratitude to Rumsfeld for Promises on top of Broken Promises”

On October 2, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK) issued a press release expressing her gratitude to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Army Secretary Francis Harvey for committing to bringing the 172nd back from Iraq at the end of their 120 day extension. On October 23, members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) Alaska sent a reply to Senator Murkowski in an open letter saying that a commitment to bring back the troops at the end of a 120 day extension is no cause for celebration. “In our opinion, Donald Rumsfeld is undeserving of any sort of gratitude. Our loved ones are still on the front lines in an October that may soon prove to be the deadliest month in Iraq for American soldiers in two years. And the civilian death toll continues to soar. When does Congress plan to hold this administration accountable for the truth that their war was and still is a total failure?” said Rich Moniak a member of Military Families Speak Out from Juneau, Alaska.

"My husband called to let me know in the best way that he knew how, that the Army was extending his deployment four more months, mere hours before he was to board a flight home," said Ms. Davis. "I am totally frustrated, disappointed and heart broken. Just when I thought we were going to be able to resume a ‘normal’ life. Just when I thought the nightmare was over, it was extended..... This war should never have started, and now I’m left wondering if it will ever end.

Some of their loved ones have died in Iraq and will never return. For other families, their loved ones are in harm’s way, thousands of miles away this holiday season. For still other families, loved ones have returned home as hollow eyed strangers, suffering from psychological wounds of this war that they will carry for the rest of their lives.

Military Families Speak Out About Recruiting Practices: Families say “Examine the Real Problem - Call for A Stand-Down on the War in Iraq!”
May 20th, 2005
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Friday, May 20, 2005 the Army is holding a one-day nationwide halt to recruiting, to allow reflection on proper recruiting practices and on how to ensure recruiters are using ethical methods of recruiting. Military families with loved ones who have been recruited, and who have served or are serving in Iraq, or who have died as a result of the war in Iraq, say the Army's public relations activities of May 20th will not solve the problem of illegal, immoral and unethical recruiting practices. The fundamental problem is that recruiters are required to sign up new recruits for an illegal, immoral and unethical war that is itself based on lies. The Army's 'stand-down' will focus attention on a 'few bad apple' recruiters and, if anything, a need for 'more training.' But recruiters have been given the job of selling a bad product, and are being placed under intense pressure to increase their sales. Bad recruiting practices are the inevitable result. Instead of playing PR games, Military Families Speak Out calls on the Army, the other branches of the military, the Bush Administration and Congress to call a stand-down on the war.

On the Occasion of the 1,500th U.S. Troop Death in Iraq, Military Families Mourn and Speak Out: How Many More Will Die in a War Based on Lies? Honor the Fallen, and Bring the Troops Home NOW!
February 28th, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC – As a suicide bomb in Hilla, Iraq takes the lives of over 100 Iraqis, and an average of two U.S. soldiers are killed each day, we are on the eve of two tragic milestones: the 1,500th troop death in Iraq, and March 19, 2005, the second anniversary of a war that should never have happened. Military Families Speak Out honors all who have fallen - US service men and women, and Iraqi men, women and children -- who have all died in a war that is neither just nor justifiable. Despite all the “banner days” that were supposed to mark turning points in this war, the violence continues and escalates. The U.S. occupation of Iraq continues to be the problem, not the solution.
Vermont Military Families Speak Out In Support of March 1st Town Meeting Resolutions calling for: Withdrawal of Troops from Iraq and Hearings on Impact of National Guard Deployments
February 28th, 2005
BOSTON, MA – On Tuesday March 1st, town meetings across Vermont will discuss resolutions calling for the withdrawal of U.S. military from Iraq and the provision of humanitarian assistance to Iraq. They further call on the Vermont Legislature to set up a commission to study impacts of National Guard deployments on soldiers, families, communities and the state. These resolutions were initiated by a coalition of groups in Vermont that includes Vermont Military Families Speak Out – a group of families with loved ones in the military, including the Vermont National Guard. The resolutions point to the erroneous claims that were used to take the U.S. into this war. They also point to the substantial costs of the deployment of the Vermont National Guard, including deaths, injuries and trauma for the troops, as well as hardships on families and employers. Vermont communities have been placed at risk due to the deployment of essential public safety personnel. Extended deployments in a war that should never have been fought leave Vermont without its full contingent of troops in times of emergency or natural disaster and also threaten the long-term viability of the Vermont National Guard as enlistment and re-enlistment rates decline.
