Funding the War is Killing Our Troops
Support Our Troops
Fund a Safe and Orderly Withdrawal from Iraq and Care for Them as They Return

CALL TO ACTION!
SENATOR CLINTON AND SENATOR OBAMA:
USE YOUR LEADERSHIP NOW TO END THE WAR IN IRAQ!

A single act of bold leadership by Senator Clinton or Senator Obama could be instrumental in ending this war. When the Senate takes up the next war funding bill, either one of them could lead a filibuster, refusing to stand down until their colleagues agree to vote against any bill that provides funding to continue the war rather than funding specifically for the swift and safe return of all our troops from Iraq. They wouldn't even need a majority of their colleagues to back them up -- all they need is 40 Senators prepared to unite behind their leadership and block additional funding to continue the war from making it through the Senate.

Click here to sign our online petition calling on Senators Obama and Clinton to take action NOW!.

Letters

Is it possible to support the troops and not the war? YES
For me, supporting the troops means utilizing the very rights that they swore to uphold when they took their oath to join the military. It means using my voice to question my government, its methods, and its actions. Thomas Jefferson said, "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism;" the responsibility to maintain the checks and balances in your elected government are not only a guaranteed rights, it is our patriotic duty. What kind of support are you really giving them if you stand silently by and watch policies enacted that only bring them death and injury? read more »

Letter to Senator Dick Durbin from MFSO Member
However you want to think about bringing about redeployment of our troops from Iraq, however you want to slice the pie, it seems to me the most effective thing the Senate can do is just turn off the Niagra Falls money spigot -- just don't send any funding forward. It sounds odd because it means the best thing the Senate can do is......nothing. You might reply, "That doesn't guarantee we'll get redeployment". To which I'll say, "Shoveling more money sure isn’t doing it either." read more »

New York Times Letter to the Editor by MFSO member Laura Costas
A member of my immediate family served for 14 months as a member of the Army reserves in Iraq, and like Will Bardenwerper I, too, have noticed that the American people seem not to value the sacrifice of our enlisted personnel.read more »

Letter to the President by MFSO member Rebecca Jaffe-Halpern
I suppose I could write to you about what it is like to spend daily life with the proud star of our small-town high school football team who can no longer walk without aid; I could write to you about what it is like to get the phone call that confirms one of your nightmares has come true and the panic that ensues; or maybe I could tell you about the frustration of knowing that a person you love dearly is fighting for his life on the battlefield of a war justified by dishonesty and irresponsibility. read more »

MFSO Member's Letter to the Editor published in New York Times 7-10-07 in response to New York Times Editorial "The Road Home"
As the mother of an active-duty United States marine, I am conflicted by your editorial. While I applaud your bold stance — “It is time for the United States to leave Iraq” — it is clearly too little, too late. Karen Meredith, who represents Gold Star Families Speak Out on the Board of Directors of Military Families Speak Out writes: "Speaker Pelosi, there are already too many Gold Star Mothers. Please show some of the same courage my son and his fellow troops displayed. Admit that you were wrong, and commit yourself to opposing any bill that will continue to fund this war that is killing our brave young men and women. Promise to do everything in your power to bring every mother's child home from Iraq quickly and safely, and to give all our troops the care they need when they get here. That's the best way to honor the mothers of our fallen soldiers this Mother's Day." read more »

Local anti-war marchers step off for Fort Drum
   May 8, 08
by James Hawver Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
As they set off on their nine-day, 118-mile march, two dozen local veterans and activists carried peace flags, anti-war banners and what they hope is a small share of the burden placed on the American soldiers sent to Iraq over the past five years. "We're the 5 percent of America that's carrying the burden of the war and suffering for it," said Military Families Speak Out member Marilyn Lambert-Fisher whose son served in Iraq with the Army Reserves, ""We believe the best way to support the troops is to bring them home and take care of them when they get here."read more »

MILITARY FAMILIES CALL ON CONGRESS TO REJECT SPEAKER PELOSI'S BETRAYAL OF OUR TROOPS
   May 7, 08

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi prepares to implement a strategy that will fund the Iraq war through 2008 and into the first term of the next president, Military Families Speak Out members across the country and on military bases around the world are outraged at this massive betrayal of our loved ones, all of our troops, our families, this nation and the people of Iraq. This strategy is designed to allow Congress to avoid a potentially embarrassing vote in the weeks and months leading up to the election in November, and to prevent a new president from having to ask for war funding in his/her first months in office. It is a cruel maneuver being done on the backs, bodies, and spirits of our troops.read more »

Many families want end to Iraq war
   May 4, 08
by Dave Lambert The Journal-Gazette
This is the second time my grandson, Bob, has been to Iraq, but this time he is leaving behind a wife and 9-month-old child. And this time, conditions in Iraq are much, much more volatile and hostile than when he went as part of a “liberation force” in the initial invasion in March 2003. Nearly three-fourths of the American people think that we should bring our troops home, but Congress isn’t listening. The media have all but forgotten about the occupation and continue to call it a “war.” But the war ended on May 2, 2003, when our president declared “mission accomplished.”read more »
